Latin America Evaluates RCS

As smartphone penetration grows in Latin America, this region is experiencing the same negative effects of over-the-top (OTT) services that led operators in Europe, North America, and Asia to launch RCS. Indeed, it’s becoming increasingly clear that RCS, given its universal reach and telco-grade quality of service, is the best choice for operators to address the OTT threat, maintain subscriber loyalty, and preserve messaging revenues.

In a recent TeleSemana.com column, experts debated whether operators should launch RCS to combat the OTT threat or deploy proprietary, OTT-like services themselves. Our VP of Corporate and Product Marketing, Damian Sazama, weighed in by highlighting the many advantages of RCS over OTTs. Perhaps most importantly, RCS, marketed as “joyn,” has the power of ubiquity, he said, unlike OTT services that operate in closed communities. In addition, RCS has the support of device manufacturers, which have already started to launch joyn-embedded handsets. Interop’s cloud-based RCS solution lets operators introduce the service immediately, with or without a costly IMS core.
